Waxing is a popular method of hair removal that leaves skin smooth and hair-free for weeks. However, if you have sensitive skin, you might be concerned about how waxing may affect your skin. We are here to guide you through what to expect during a waxing appointment if you have sensitive skin. In this blog we will talk about what sensitive skin is, how to prepare for waxing, what to expect during the process, and how to care for your skin afterward.

What is Sensitive Skin?

Sensitive skin is a term used to describe skin that is easily irritated by various factors such as products, environmental conditions, or even stress. Common signs of sensitive skin include redness, itching, burning, and dryness. Caution is recommended for people with sensitive skin because their skin can react with irritation or have adverse reaction as compared to those with normal skin. Common adverse reaction can include: redness, inflammation, hypersensitivity, itchiness, swelling, or rash, to name a few.

Before Your Wax: Preparation Tips

  1. Choose the Right Salon: Look for a salon that has experience dealing with sensitive skin. Reading reviews and asking for recommendations from close friends can help you find a reputable place.

  2. Patch Test: Before your appointment, ask the salon to perform a patch test. This involves applying a small amount of wax to a discreet area of your skin to check for adverse reactions. This could help test if you have allergies to the wax used, as well as see how the wax feels on your skin.

  3. Avoid Retinoids and Exfoliants: At least 3 days before your wax, stop using any skincare products that contain retinoids or exfoliants, as these products thin the skin out and will cause the skin to break during your appointment. Be sure to let your service provider know if you are using retinoids before your service.

  4. Moisturize: Keep your skin well-hydrated in the days leading up to your appointment. Hydrated skin keeps your skin healthy and makes the waxing process easier.

  5. Pain Relief: If you have a low pain threshold, consider taking an over-the-counter pain reliever about 30 minutes before your appointment. This can help take the ease off the pain during their service.

During Your Wax: What to Expect

  1. Communication: Before your service begins, let your service provider know that you have sensitive skin. They can adjust their techniques accordingly and ensure you are comfortable throughout your service.

  2. Product Choice: Ensure that the salon uses high-quality wax and soothing products designed for sensitive skin. For sensitive skin we use hard wax is often recommended as possible because this wax tends to adhere to the hair rather than the skin, and makes your experience less painful.

  3. Technique: Your service provider should work quickly and efficiently to minimize discomfort. At Smooth Body Wax Center we also apply a pre-wax oil to create a barrier between the wax and your skin. This minimizes discomfort and ensures less chances for adverse reaction to the waxed area.

After Your Wax: Post-Wax Care

  1. Soothe Your Skin:  After your wax we will apply a post wax oil that soothes the skin and reduces redness and potential for inflammation. Products containing aloe vera, chamomile or tea tree oil can also help calm the skin.

  2. Avoid Heat: Stay away from hot showers, saunas, and intense workouts for at least 24 hours after your wax to prevent irritation and infection.

  3. Wear Loose Clothing: Opt for loose-fitting clothes to avoid friction and irritation on the waxed area.

  4. Exfoliate Gently: After 48 hours, start gently exfoliating the waxed area to prevent ingrown hairs. Use a mild scrub or a soft washcloth during your shower. We offer a wide range of exfoliants that help to keep your skin healthy and glowing.

  5. Moisturize: Keep your skin moisturized with a gentle, fragrance-free lotion to maintain hydration and prevent dryness.

Yes, you can get waxed if you have sensitive skin, but it does require extra care and attention. By preparing properly, choosing the right salon, and following post-wax care instructions, you can minimize discomfort and achieve smooth, hair-free skin.
